Born in New Delhi, India, Khan studied at Hansraj College, University of Delhi, received theatre training under Barry John, and later pursued Mass Communication at Jamia Millia Islamia. During his college years, he actively participated in stage productions, laying the foundation for his acting career. He made his television acting debut with *Fauji* (1988), followed by *Circus* (1989). Following the deaths of his father in 1980 and his mother in 1991, Khan relocated to Mumbai to pursue acting professionally. Khan's first signed feature film was *Dil Aashna Hai* (1992), directed by Hema Malini. However, *Deewana* (1992) was released first and is officially recognized as his theatrical film debut.
